Résumé :

In the Paris of the belle époque, a small group of artists aspiring to move beyond Impressionism wanted to show their work in a setting without the restrictions of a jury or awards. And so, at far remove form the Académie des beaux-arts, the Salon des Indépendants was born. There, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and their friends were free to exhibit their paintings, which, in accordance with the latest scientific theories, featured dabs of juxtaposed colours. Neo-Impressionism would blossom there, and the avant-garde artists of the time were readily invited to join the Indépendants. This book tells this fascinating story through a selection of works from an extraordinary private collection.
