The exhibition Partners in Design: Alfred H. Barr Jr. and Philip Johnson is a natural extension of Liliane and David M. Stewart's collection of decorative arts objects from 1900 to the present. This exhibition explores a key stage in the North American design revolution - the collaboration between Alfred H. Barr, the first director of the Museum of Modern Art, and Philip Johnson, the second director of the Museum of Modern Art. Barr, the first director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and Philip Johnson, the Museum's first curator of architecture, who were ambassadors of modernism in North America, is a unifying theme of the Stewart Collection's mission. Organized by the Stewart Program for Modern Design in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Partners in Design traces the introduction of the revolutionary aesthetics and principles of the Bauhaus to North America, from the movement's school in Dessau to Barr and Johnson's personal experiments with modernism in their own homes to MoMA's most influential exhibitions and beyond.
