Summary:

Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), master of Art Nouveau, was the most famous American designer and glass-maker in the last decade of the nineteenth century. Son of the founder of the celebrated jewellery and silver firm of Tiffany & Co., Louis set out to be a painter, training in New York and Paris, but soon turned his attention to interior decoration and glass design. He became captivated by the brilliance and rich hues of glass and experimented with irregular forms, unique blends of colour, iridescent surfaces and accidental effects, allowing the medium to speak for itself. Tiffany used glass in every possible form, including leaded-glass windows, lamps, inlaid-glass mosaics, luxury items and blown-glass vessels. By the turn of the century, to own a Tiffany work was a sign of prestige.
